Hearing Impaired Children
Facing the fact that your child has a hearing problem is surely a test for any parent. But you must enter this situation with full confidence and expect nothing but success for your child. Regardless of the age of your child, their chance of successfully addressing their hearing impairment issues directly hinges on your ability to stay positive.
And hearing impaired children always best benefit from consistent measures. Audiologists and parents alike should never expect the child to achieve maximum auditory competence without dedicated, specific hearing training. For example, simply because a child has a hearing aid that does not mean that they have all the resources and help they need to successfully address their hearing impairment problem.
Hearing impaired kids require much more beyond wearing amplification devices. They must learn how to listen and how to use auditory information in order to maximize any existing auditory skills they might have in hopes of developing them further. This will make a significant beneficial impact on their speech and language skills. All hearing impaired kids should go through regular auditory habilitation and rehabilitation measures in order to achieve the best hearing improvements.
As part of any child’s hearing impairment program, they should also undergo behavioral testing as well. This will help determine whether or not a child is getting as much help as they need from their hearing aids and the training they are receiving.
In addition, while pediatric audiologists may be able to do a lot to help your child, they can only do so much, and the onus is on you to fill the gaps.
